"My metabolism just isn't what it used to be" is one of the most common things people say somewhere around their late thirties or early forties — and unlike a lot of folk wisdom about weight, this one actually holds up under scrutiny. Here's what's really going on, and which habits are worth your energy.
Metabolism isn't a single dial you can turn up or down. It's the sum of every chemical process your body uses to convert food into energy — including your resting metabolic rate (the energy you burn just staying alive), the energy used to digest food, and the energy spent on physical activity. When people talk about a "slow metabolism," they're almost always talking about resting metabolic rate, since it makes up the largest share of daily calorie burn for most people.
Here's the piece that explains most of the mid-life slowdown: muscle tissue burns more calories at rest than fat tissue does. Starting in your thirties, and picking up pace through your forties and fifties, adults tend to lose a small percentage of muscle mass every decade if they aren't actively working to maintain it — a process sometimes called sarcopenia. Less muscle means a lower resting metabolic rate, even if body weight itself hasn't changed.
This is precisely why strength training tends to show up in every credible list of "what actually helps": it's one of the few levers that directly targets the muscle-loss side of the equation, rather than just the calories-in-calories-out side.
For many people, this period overlaps with meaningful hormonal changes — declining estrogen during perimenopause and menopause, or gradually declining testosterone in men. These shifts can influence where fat is stored (often shifting toward the midsection), how hungry you feel, and how efficiently your body partitions incoming calories toward muscle versus fat. None of this is something willpower fixes on its own.
Poor sleep does two things that work against weight management: it raises ghrelin (a hormone that increases hunger) and lowers leptin (a hormone that signals fullness). It also tends to increase cravings for high-calorie, high-carbohydrate foods specifically — not a coincidence, since a sleep-deprived brain looks for the fastest available energy source. If you're doing everything else right and still not seeing movement, sleep is worth an honest look before anything else.
Chronic stress keeps cortisol elevated for longer than it's meant to be, which is associated with increased abdominal fat storage and can also drive stress eating. This is one of the harder factors to control directly, but even modest interventions — a short walk, a consistent wind-down routine, cutting back on late-night screen time — tend to move the needle more than people expect.
Metabolism does shift with age, and the physiology behind it is real. But "slower" isn't the same as "broken" — the levers that work (strength training, protein, sleep, stress management, and consistent daily habits) are the same ones that have always worked.
